Operation Blitzkrieg re-release
« on: March 19, 2011, 12:19:22 AM »
This is a from-scratch remake of a 7-map 'episode' (consisting of three single-player and four deathmatch maps) I released 8 years ago under the alias Dave Nukem.  Despite uploading the file it has been lost completely and I've managed to recreate the single player component with an additional two single player maps to replace the four DM maps, which I've decided not to remake.  Also, unlike the lost version I've wisely done away with the .exe file used to extract the maps and settle on a zipped folder instead.  Much of the detail focuses on shading rather than sprite detailing as this episode is designed to be true in design and feel to the original Duke 3D episodes.

Below are some screenshots which have admittedly been hastily put together, so forgive me if they look crap...my level design blog has one or two more so check those out if you wish using the link in my signature.

I like what I'm seeing here.  (Y)  The design looks pretty simple, but everything is well-proportioned and you have breathed life into it with good texture choices and some nice shading.

How much progress have you made?

I'm very close to being finished...I need to have it play tested first to make sure the monster placement and ammo distribution are ok and that there are no bugs.   ;D

If you need a tester, I would be willing to play test it myself.  I'm not a mapper and I don't give much feedback on design details (although I will make note of glitches) but I am obsessed with gameplay and I always have plenty to say about monster and item placement, flow, etc.

Nice work, man!
I liked the second screenshot.
Your light/shadow work looks good.

But what about this "episode" thing; DM and SP maps in the same episode?

My advice; Put lots of work into your three SP maps and scrap the DM maps. ( Or at least, don't spend time on 'em)
Close to nobody plays DM maps anymore.

In the first post, he already said that he was remaking 2 of the DM maps into single player maps and scrapping the other DM maps.

Thanks man, I've sent you a copy via email.

If there's anybody else who wants to test it let me know thanks, and I'll send you a copy as well.

No he didn't.
Where did you read that?

I've managed to recreate the single player component with an additional two single player maps to replace the four DM maps, which I've decided not to remake.

Additional two single player maps, it is.

Putting all effort into SP is a right decision. That is my point.

Very excited for this; maps that stay true to the originals always have a special place in our hearts.

I like the original vanilla look of those screens.

I can test it as well, since it looks like my calendar may be more open than normal this coming up week.

Hey,why do you not come to yang net before saying shitts ? ;D

But,you are right by anyway:4 DM for 3 SP maps in a episode is just mad.
Dave must be lazy or he thinks that make DM is more easy than solo  ;)

Now that I've got five SP maps rather than 3 SP and 4 DM I can now by my own admission call it an episode.  So yeah, there was an element of laziness to it at the time of the original  ;D.  But still, I will make DM maps rather than SP maps if I'm stumped for ideas, yet the need to be creative in some way springs to mind.

Thanks to those who've already volunteered to do beta testing for me.  I will need a few more though.  Anybody keen?  Let me know and I'll send you a copy via email.
