[Release] School. My first succesful level.
« on: December 21, 2010, 08:54:21 PM »
http://www.4shared.com/file/08fEG-qH/SCHOOL.html

This is my first level I have actually finished since messing around on and off with build.  It's based off of my old middle school.  There are a good amount of enemies and guns.  I tried to make some interesting classrooms and a lot of comic elements in it.  Please give it a try and tell me what you think.

Just played it, it was quite hard to finish due to the amount of baddies and the random weapon / health / ammo placement, I like really hard maps with that type of 'impossible' gameplay so I'm not complaining but a lot of other people might dislike it. I didn't get the starting location though, is the player supposed to start in the gymnasium like that ? The way I finished the level, I started there, ran around grabbing all the weapons and goodies I could find in the bathrooms (constantly dieing and reloading as I was still trying to figure out what to do and where to go to get my hands on the weapons), killed everything in the gymnasium, ventured outside, circled the monsters until I defeated them all (which was hard until I found the hidden devastators and RPG's under the shacks), found the blue key under the last shack, opened the door to the sewers and pressed the nukebutton. I didn't have to venture through the school itself, and it's only after I checked the map in Mapster that I realized how huge it was, and how many areas I had left unexplored. Maybe all these locations (aka. 80% of the map) are primarily intended for dukematch play or something ? If not, then there's a major flaw in the gameplay somewhere.

I liked the map though. The design reminded me a lot of the type of user maps that were coming out in the late 90's / early 00's - not modern-looking yet, but clean cut and more detailed than your average original level, with some fancy sprite use. Shame about the complete absence of realistic lighting, or even wallshading though. And even if I probably played it wrong, killing a bunch of monsters while running for your life like that is quite fun

Thanks for trying it out, I'm thinking you must of downloaded almost immediately after I put it up.  Problem being I found out it was the wrong file at the time and took another half hour to fix it.  You are suppose to start in the front of the school next to the main office not immediately in the gym surrounded by 100 enemies.  I would love for you to try downloading the map again and seeing it a lot more balanced. I just checked the link and it should be the right one now.  Thanks again.

Hey, why don't you fill in a template.txt file and attach it to your post, rockdrummercm?

Maybe I'll upload your map to DNR server.

Grab a template form attached below  ;)

That's probably it. I downloaded the new file and I'm going to play it properly now  (Y)

Completed it the way it's supposed to be completed. What a great gameplay (Y) it took me 60 minutes, mostly because I couldn't find a room near the beginning (the math lab) and I spent a little while wandering around looking for what I had missed. The firefights were awesome, I'd say the health ratio was perfect (just scarce enough to be both fun and challenging), I was a little low on shotgun and chaingun ammo throughout the whole thing though, nothing bad because it forced me to use other weapons which is always an original gameplay choice, so you don't need to fix that, it's just that a few extra shotgun shells here and there wouldn't have hurt. The ending was obviously much easier now than it was the way I played the first version of the map, hah. Liked the facebook pages and stuff on the computers everywhere, little jokes are always a nice touch.

What I said about the design still stands, it's basic and there are some beginnerish mistakes here and there (misaligned textures, lack of lighting...), but it looks quite cool and it works for what it's supposed to do, it could be better but I've seen worse maps.

I found a bug though - the glass of the windows of the special ed room aren't blockable, the player and monsters can walk right through them.

I'd give this map a solid 85 / 86, maybe even a little more because I like long, hectic maps.

Maybe some tweaking before an "official" release?

That would be great.  I'll fill out the template and see about fixing it up.

Thank you, that's great to hear.  I'm gonna try to fix that bug again I never dealt with enemies coming through but I know rockets would.  I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I fixed the one bug I was told about and put up the template.  I tested it a lot initially so hopefully there aren't any other problems.  Thanks.

My pleasure  ;)

Map uploaded to the server and I slightly modified your first post.

A side note: I stumbled into a bug I've never seen before at the end of the level. When fighting the hordes of alien scum outside, the second battlelord didn't recognize me at all. I shot him, kicked him in the nutsack, called him names...everything ,but he just walked around and refused to fight back. Strange.
Oh well, I guess it's a bug in my end.

Thanks for the upload.  I did notice that bug once but I played many times though before and it didn't happen so I'm not sure whats with that.

I have seen that happen before, and only with battlelords.  I think it's an eduke bug.  Monsters don't "wake up" until they see the player.  For some reason, battlelords don't always see the player.  My theory is that the hitscan function got messed up at some point; it would explain that and other problems that have cropped up, like some buttons not being pressable.

I use a version of eDuke that's a few months old (because I have to use the forcegl function to be able to play in 32bit on my comp and that feature stopped working for me after a certain update, so I'm stuck at the one before), and I've never encoutered that bug, so maybe it's a very recent change that fucked things up

I played it, and althought I liked it the secret rooms with the names of the Columbine guys and Cho seemed a bit poor taste. It might of been dark humour but it just seemed a bit too dark for my tastes.
