WGR2 CBP?
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:01:36 AM »
Hi everyone, few months ago i was working with a map for WGR2 mod, and i was thinking if this could be a community project, otherwise i  don´t plan to finish it. I know is not the same than a 2-hour project, and some people don´t know how to use wgr build settings and new effects, but it could be a cool idea to work on this...

What do u think?

I have not looked at the map you attached yet, but I'm in favor of just about anything that keeps WGR2 alive, as long as the result is of high quality.  As far as I'm concerned, WG has veto power though; if he doesn't like the CBP idea, it shouldn't happen.

When Spiker made his map, it was used as an opportunity to add a new character and some other new stuff.  I would also be willing to add some new effects and/or monsters and other features if people were making a new map.

A CBP is risky because one of the mappers might not deliver and delay it to death.  With a TC, it's probably even riskier than usual because if people aren't familiar with the effects and tile set it gives them another reason to delay.  If you have inspiration, my advice to you would be to just go ahead and build regardless of what anyone else is doing.

EDIT:  I have a small unused boss battle arena type map that Spiker made at my request; perhaps it could come in handy.

The audience is going to be pretty limited for that project. Maybe Spiker will do a cooperation composition, and help you finish it.

You also might have better luck at Duke4 with your shout out; this place is dead.

Yeah i already thought ´bout all those disadvantages, but as i said maybe it´s the only way to finish this kind of map. I have yet to finish sunstroke before end of year and perhaps the other map i posted in the random screens post.

Edit: and i´m working with the idea for a mod (collecting textures, models ,etc.) so the next year i´ll be too busy to do anything else (i mean maps :P)

Going to Duke4 to post the idea. (Y)

Sadly I dont frequent mapster nor duke related stuff anymore. but i have a pretty nice and small chunk of a map i started to build for WGR2 once. If the idea gets some altitude, i would love to share it in contribution´s sake.

I'm thinking anyone who bothers to map anymore is trying to cram as much of it in as they can before DNF is released.

And I'm thinking that anyone who thinks that needs to think again.  WGR2 has almost no relation to DNF.  One of the player characters is the same, but everything else is different.  DNF will cost $50, WGR2 is free.  DNF uses Unreal engine, WGR2 uses Build and (really cool) 8-bit art.  In DNF you can only hold two weapons at a time, in WGR2 you can hold 10 and they all kick more ass than a karate master at a donkey kicking convention.   ;D

And as for vanilla maps, do you really think that someone like MRCK is going to care whether DNF is released?  I doubt he will even play it.

It would appear that the reason I stated, is the reason Mike can't get anyone to work on the map with him. At least from a third person point of view, since everyone who even bothered to respond is "too busy". (i.e. working on their own shit)

I personally could care less if DNF came out. I might even buy it and play it, but it's been so long that it's not even related to Duke3D any more. It's a completely different franchise as far as I'm concerned.

And as far as vanilla maps, there aren't enough people who map for Duke3d anymore to fill a small closet. Even less who are familiar with mapping for WGR2.

I caught the Gambini disease. He was right, and I was just a noob. I mapped because I enjoyed mapping and it was relaxing and fun. Gambini had put out several releases and got tired of the "next to nothing" amount of responses. After my third release I finally caught on to what he meant.

^If you are mapping only because it's relaxing and fun, then why do you care about the response?  :P ;D

I'd say; Welcome to the club.
I've left Build and moved onto the Source engine. ( seems that I'm boarding a sinking ship there as well ).
Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistence
One step from lashing out at you...
You want in to get under my skin
And call yourself a friend
I've got more friends like you
What do I do?

If you make a map for vanilla Duke 3D and quietly release it by starting a thread at a Duke forum (or all the forums, it doesn't really matter) then you will not get much feedback these days.  Of course I will play it and comment on it, and so will Mikko and a few other hardcore players, but that's about it.

The response to WGR2 has been pretty good.  There have been some positive reviews at external sites, and some nice feedback at the Duke forums and Mod DB.  In fact, lately I would say that Mod DB is a better place to get feedback.  I attribute the relative success of WGR2 to several factors:  1) it gives players something fresh and exciting, 2) it's free, 3) it has been promoted with videos and screenshots, and not just in the Duke 3D community.  Of course, it's also an extremely high quality TC, but that goes without saying.

If you want more praise for your work, making a map for WGR2 makes a lot more sense than making a vanilla Duke map.   ;D  So it's ironic that this discussion would happen in this thread.

I still map vanilla Duke every once in awhile because it's enjoyable for me, but I'm done with public releases.

I originally didn't care about feedback, but upon observing the lack of responses (positive or negative) to my last two releases (and good maps recently released by others) I figured, "what's the point of even releasing anything".

So now I map for myself only, at my own leisure and pace.

I agree that WGR2 is an excellent mod, and if I was approached to do a map about 6 months ago, I would have done it. Now though, I'm pretty much done with any serious mapping. I wouldn't even be interested in participating in a 2 hour CBP. I really wasn't in the mood to join in on the last one.

I apologize for de-railing this thread. I really do hope that this map gets completed, one way or another, and I'm glad WG, Dan, and the rest are getting some good response for their longs hours and hard work on this mod .

There are a number of problems to spend time doing something that gives u "nothing" , i mean just like give away pictures or sculptures to all your friends and neighbors, specially when u could to do other "constructive" things (yes like improving my english writing) or do things to make some money, i don´t saying i dislike to map without receiving money, receiving feedback or not. As Forge said "because it's enjoyable for me" that´s the reason for what we do what we do...

@Forge:

"I originally didn't care about feedback, but upon observing the lack of responses (positive or negative) to my last two releases (and good maps recently released by others) I figured, "what's the point of even releasing anything". "

...but on the other hand u can´t make something great and don´t show it to others.

I think i missed the central point, i´m too tired this night and remember english isn´t my native language. :P

But i think Dan is right, a good mod has more possibilities to "hook" the people than an excellent map. So I've been seriously considering not to mapping anymore for duke, at least not for vanilla on 2011 :P, of course i´ll finish suntroke and maybe other quick map...

I still mapping cos i like mapster (or build) a lot, nor Duke Nukem, it could be "Gordon Freeman" "Dominike Nike", "Don Ramón", "El Conde Balazo!!!" or whatever, the best of DukeNukem was Build...

don´t know... just maybe i was late to the party...

-----------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: So maybe this map has many chances to be finished on 2011...
