HL2: Final Project Diary by Leon Brinkmann
« on: October 08, 2010, 08:35:04 AM »
In the beginning i had a story in mind that was about a sp-leveldesigner, and what happens with
him while he makes his maps.
But like always did Valve "surprised" us with new engine and editor updates while we were
working on this mod. And particularly one big update caused us so many problems that we had to
start over from scratch while the mod was done for about 98%. Many times it looked like this mod
would never be finished because of this, and that was something that we simply could not happen.
People that have followed our work over the last 10 years know that we always finish and release
our sp-mappacks and mods, and this would not be the first time that we didn't. Especially not
because it was Valves fault and not ours.
So we worked for about 6.5 month to change this mod from a HL2 sp-mod in to a HL2 ep2 sp-mod.
It's simply too much work to name all issues that we had to deal with and fix. Still, it did make that
we had to throw the story out all together and release what could be fixed by us. Therefore it does
look like that the mod does start with a story, and that after a few maps the story does seem to
fade away. This couldn't be helped. It was this or release no mod at all.
Therefore also is this the last mappack or mod that we make with a Valve game, we will not be
"surprised" again by Valve it's corrupted updates and therefore we will move on to newer games
and better updated engines.
Please follow us to see what we will do next....

You're quoting the wrong project.

I'm gonna take a look at this once I'm done with Strider Mountain.

I don't know which mod you've written about, Puritan.
It's definitely not Final Project though.   R) ;D

Which one is it? Might be worth playing

the story you quoted is from the first Half Life2 sp-mappack that i made, together with Baltic.
I made it back in 30-03-2005 and it is called Leon SP-mappack. it contains 4 large sp-maps that are linked together in to one mod.
although it's not actualy a real mod, meaning i didn't add anything custom, i used only HL2 assets.
Still, when you like Final Project and Strider Mountain, then you will also like this sp-mappack.
Between this mappack and Strider Mountain did we make another large sp-mod, quit similar to Strider Mountain qua size, action, and gameplay.
Maybe you have heart of it, or even played it, it's called Coastline to Atmosphere and has 15 large sp-maps and some custom content.

should you be interested in all my sp-mappacks and sp-mods that i have made over the last 10 years then please check my site, there you can
watch movies, and find all sp-mappacks and mods, for a lot of fpshooting games.
Hope you don't mind me telling this all here.

Concept-wise, Coastline was pretty good but I mostly remember its gameplay being quite frustrating. Strictly in terms of gameplay I enjoyed the SP-mappack more.

That maps pack was the first custom thing that i´ve ever played for HL2 (apart from a few not worthy things). You´ve done a very good work with the soldiers AI and assault systems i recall. And a few puzzles were pretty cool too IIRC this map packs ends with a few turbines one has to power and blow up the place.

I wonder if you ever released any of your Duke Nukem maps (according to your website, you still have a few).

Yes, i´m already back. Same internet service but with a huge window that leads to a nice set of trees at my side.

Had to rush it before leaving work friday.
No internet at home atm. (Can't play Final Project either when Steam is running offline)
Wrong quote is now corrected.

Cool to see you registered here, Leon.  ;)

( I've spent the weekend with "Strider Mountain", my all time favourite mod ).

A question Leon:

Do you think all the latest updates from Valve is because they're planning to release Episode 3 or something?
I can't find any other reasons why they're doing this maintenance on a relatively old engine.
