Opened mapster for the first time today. Hmm.

I think I'll be ready for "Duke is Twenty".

Just draw some random shape pressing the space bar as you wish to add dots in the way (dont cross lines), be sure to join the last vertice with the first one. then, move around the narrow pressing the mouse´s right button, once the narrow is inside the sector (all the space within the drawing is a sector) press the little enter of the numpad. If you could follow these first instructions okay, you should be now in the 3d mode, aim the walls and floor/ceiling with the cursor, pressing V twice will bring you access to the tiles set, once you choose a proper tile and press enter, this will get printed over the surface you was aiming to at the moment of pressing V. Finally, when you got a good textures combination, press pgup and pgdown to move up and down ceiling and floor.

That´s just the very basic begining, but as you see, it´s not something for wizards.

I made a big sector and was messing with making walls (red and white), raising and lowering the red sectors, raising and lowering the ceilings and floors, texturing, tilting, and a few other things. Just seeing what stuff does. When I get used to what the commands do and what I can figure out on my own, I'll open some official Duke maps to see how some of the things are done, like the spiral staircase in E1L1, etc.
I think the hardest thing for me right now, since I'm a cherry, is getting the sizes of everything right. I just need to figure out how big one grid square is in relation to the actual game. I also need to figure out how to make things the right height.

edit: I did notice that when I raised a red sector, the ceiling directly above it raised too. I haven't got that far yet, but I thought I saw a command to keep it from doing that.

One thing I found useful in regards to getting the sizes right is when in 3D mode press the caps lock until 'gravity' is displayed. This sets the view to about dukes eye level.

I was doing that to get back down to floor after following the ceiling while raising it. I wasn't aware that it was actual in game eye level. That's good to know. Thanks.

Yeah, 3D mode is almost identical to what you'll see in game.

So, you're messing around with Mapster32?
That's nice. Just remember; It could be addictive

PS. Duke is 12 ' clicks' high.
He can jump upon something that is 21 ' clicks '..a switch should be some 8 ' clicks ' above the floor...etc.
Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistence
One step from lashing out at you...
You want in to get under my skin
And call yourself a friend
I've got more friends like you
What do I do?

It might be addictive, but I'm only getting 30 min to an hour a day if I'm lucky. So at that rate I might be confident enough to actually try to do a map in about a year. Right now I'm just playing around. If I make something I'm proud of during that time, I'll e-mail you a screen shot.

Thats good to know, I won't have to keep guessing the height duke can jump to and keep switching out of mapster to the game to test it out.

Thanks :D

My pleasure.
In case you didn't know it: In Mapster 3D you can hit ctrl + P to quick launch the map you're building. The starting point would be at the same spot you are in when hitting ctrl + P.. ;)

Ah the InfoSuite, I downloaded that. It's what brought me to the site.
Really useful - infact the best build guide I have found on the net.
It was only the second one I found but I don't think I need to look any further  ;)

The Infosuite is what I've been using, more or less. I got the list of commands and have been messing with them to see what they do, then I refer to the Infosuite when I get stuck on trying to figure something out.

The Infosuite is very useful, but it's missing quite a few things that I had to figure out on my own. Simple, basic things too, like how to put a window in the second story of a house and how to make a doorway from inside of a house to the outside. (I'm building a two story house if you can't tell - and not just a box with the walls going from floor to ceiling, one with a real slanted two tiered roof---should be good practice for a cherry).
