2 DM Maps
« on: November 01, 2008, 12:09:05 PM »
Just finished some DM maps in my spare time.

They are Abandoned Asylum DM, and Cyber DM Arena.
The names most likely will tell most of what to expect, but i'll add screenshots as well.

They are already finished, so i wont be editing them unless there suddenly is some kind of big bug or the likes. Any other info will be in the template.

Hmm... First the screenshots for the asylum map.

I do wonder if the people here even play DM frequently, or even occasionally!
It certainly isnt the easiest game to master in deathmatch.

Edit: Done, a bit late to edit. Was checking other topics as well.

And now the maps.
My excuses to triple post, but i dont want to wait ages to upload stuff at file hosts.
This is more easily controlled as well. And i dont have to pay. :P

Edit: Files replaced, an wrong map may have been accidently uploaded, but it happens, they where next to eachother. :P

I haven't downloaded the maps yet and don't play DM anyway so I can only judge what's shown in the shots so far, and I actually really like the design for once, especially the cyber map, it's a brillant concept (I've never seen a similar map before) and it must have taken some creativity to put it all together, the results are pretty interesting.

Second shot of the first map still looks a bit too cramped though, but that might be just the angle it was taken at.
another cup of coffee

Ah, my friend also stated he never seen a cyber map before in Duke as well. :P

And you dont have to play it in DM to look around, so feel free to open an editor, or check it out in singleplayer. Co-op spots have been added as well, in case someone has an odd use for them.

I've been toying around with the sprite-devouring theme of cyber maps before, but its kind of the first one i released officially. Note that so many sprites may lower FPS, though. Oh, try another thingy i accidently created, use a rapid firing weapon on the button at the control panel! Hehe... It has amusing results.

Edit: Oh, the first screens of the asylum map are designed to be a tiny bit cramped. It makes the RPG and the likes more effective. It also allows for suprises, especially if you hit and run with nightvision in the darkness. Plenty of ventilation shafts and stuff to hide in or go trough.
It allows for flexible movement in the map, well, kind of.

It is rather realistically themed, and in reality you dont need gigantic hallways, no? :P

Edit: I'll be off for a while to play Doom on Skulltag now.

AASYLUMDM; is far too cramped for good deathmatch gaming, especially considering Dukematch is usually fast paced, players will find themselves getting stuck everywhere. Good design however.

CYBERDMA; wrong map added to the archive. You have DAEMONUS in there.

Eh, wrong map? I hope i didnt... I'll recheck the files, but it may happen i accidently dragged another file into the zip.

And the other map was rather meant to be a bit tiny, but not that im too interested in a discussion about cramped maps right now. I wanted to give it a bit of a train255/262 feeling in gameplay style.

I'll just replace the files and see if it is correct now.

Edit: Done. Even quickly checked, it all seems right now, try again.

They both look good enough, but I dont think the design is good enough to keep DM interesting.

When it comes to DM I don't  care how a map looks, it can all be made of texture 0 (brick) as long as it has fluid gameplay and is fairly balanced then i am happy with that.

Thats what I said, good DM maps rely heavily on design.

Ah well, it was a side project to put some inspiration into.
Now im rather bored again though. :P

Hmm... Still need to finish that Coop map, if i ever get more inspiration.

Well, in the meanwhile this will do, i guess. Cant make everyone happy with the design.
And you wouldn't see me playing a map with the default brick texture only, even if it did have perfect design. DM maps do have to look somewhat decent. Or atleast have some effort put into them.

Ah well, atleast the files are no longer misplaced. Wonder what to make next...

I disagree with Commander - playing in a well-designed area definately adds to the experience. Makes it more immersive.

Anyway, I checked the maps.

Asylum: well designed map, would work better as a sp-map though. Dukematch is fast-paced and usually involves a lot of strafing and dodging, which is pretty hard to do in this map. Everything is pretty cramped and stuff gets in the way. I can't imagine any real firefights, since you can't really dodge enemy fire here.
Maybe it's a good 1 on 1 map though, since there are lots of places to hide. A sort of a hide and seek map. :P Haven't played it yet. :)

Cyber Arena: the design looks original and interesting, could be a nice fast-paced 1 on 1 map. There's stuff scattered all over the place. Doesn't seem to offer anything then straight-forward shooting, but that could still be fun for a while.

When im killing your bro in mp I don't have time to stand around looking at the architecture and shading ect of the map. Hmmmmm, maybe thats why he is so easy to kill, to busy standing around maybe?  :P

I rather agree with Merlijn that the map has to be somewhat decent, i dont think alot of people would play a barren map or a really ugly one, but everyone has their own preference.

And the idea for the asylum map was rather small, if you ask me too small to make it into a coop map, but if you ever do wish to use it for anything, or the likes, the txt file states you may use/modify parts or the map. :P

The idea of the cyber map was for players to show their skill at aiming and dodging, while there are some obstacles, there are not too many. Health and atomic health is scattered around the map, so any good dodger is not going to drop like a fly just yet, i hope. Even a sniping spot is there as well, and i kind of like the idea to jump trough the roof of a block, and land on its top side, to simply go up. Any hiders could be obliterated with an RPG.
Oh, have you tried using the button at the control panel rapidly as well? :P Its an amusing bug i found and left in, hehe. Im sure the chaingun works on it well, or whatever it was called, i played Doom a little too much lately.

Oh, and all respawn spots in the cyber map have a shotgun and ammo spawn on them, so it'll be reasonable to respawn and keep going, hehe.

Haha, who knows. :P
I get your point , but for instance dukematching in a well-designed casino is much more fun then dukematching in some labyrinth of ugly, boring hallways. It just increases the experience when the location is immersive and feels real (IMO of course).

On topic: me, Maarten and William Gee played both of your maps yesterday Carthief. It was pretty much what I expected lol. 'Aasylum' had a lot of camping possibilities and generally was too cramped for fast paced action. It quickly became a game of 'who spots the other first?', since RPG and shrinker are absolutely dominating in this map. Still fun for a while though, the hide-and-seek element helps.
'Cyber-dm' is straight-forward, non-stop action and IMO it's a pretty fun map, since dying basically has no consequence: once you respawn you immidiately get a shotgun, there's stuff all over the place and you can instantly get back into the action. Good for a short match. :)

Please note that we're all very casual players, so more experienced players might not agree with the above. ;)
