Working on another map
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:06:40 PM »
Yeah, not too original title, but as i havent decided on my current map's title... I'll leave it at this.
The map im building now will be a bit RED-inspired, as well as the desert village/town theme, as i suck at modern cities. And the desert has its charms.

Its going to be by far less... cramped, in most area's. Planning on some nice events, as well as sudden suprises, that litterally will make Duke's heart beat.

The map is currently small, things being added each day, if im feeling a bit in the mood. As im currently busy with work a little, i dont have so much time as i had on the previous one. :P

Well, i suppose enough chatter and now for some screenshots.
Oh, and dont comment on the shading just now, i'll first be doing the basic structure, give me some inspiration and idea's and things will go alot faster, hehe.

Edit: My current favorite screenshot would be #2. Though the computer/notebook/laptop thingy also looks quite nice, while it has the sattelite opened, pointing at the small town.

The computer indeed worked out well, it exactly fits the texture, even better, the screen cant break! Though you will see a bullet hole, if you shoot it, but oh well. It also allows for hiding while looking outside by sattelite, usefull in the planned Dukematch, that will probaly roam about outside, buildings providing some protection. This specific one has a one-side window too, to watch out from.

On another note, i'll make sprite roof buildings, i guess, as the sky is quite high, and the buildings are a bit small, it also looks quite good.

And on the first screenshot, the sound makes the event triggering there all the better. And it isnt your usual ambient sound. :P

Nice screenshots, though the texture choices are the same as in your first map...

But it does look better than the first one.

Doesnt seem like a crime to redo a bit of the style used in the recently released map, though im planning on a bit less cramped now.

The town is going well, adding some vicious, mean, and deadly traps in the more dark area. And some sounds along. Though the buildings with sprite roofs take time to finish.
At least its weekend, and there's a bit more time now.

The road is minorly improved too, still need to give that one building a roof.

I'd like to add more screenshots, but updates are going slow, and the trap isnt finished yet. :P

And by all means, give me some other comments then the texturing! Its just my style!
Well, unless it looks like total crap, or bugged.

Well I really like those screens, I see #1 and #2 are the same room with different lightning? Anyway looks nice.  (Y)
As for the last screen, the big building looks pretty bad at the moment but I guess that's just becouse it's WIP. Be sure to trim the textures correctly. Also don't forget to make the surroundings of the town more interesting: add different heights and slopes into those mountains. ;)

Good luck, I like what I see. :)

Ah, the buildings might be somewhat upgraded sooner or later, but its hard to make them somewhat decent.

You might find the trap parts i have for plan interesting, hehe. Its going to be something quite... dangerous, and simply wrong(in a evil way  >:D).
I have currently, a nice crusher planned, slowly driving the player into death, in a blood filled room, well, if the player is panicking too much, or slow.

For now no further screenshots, its not too far yet, and i want to keep the traps a suprise, hehe...

Oh, and those 2 rooms that look alike, are kind of... wel, 2 dimensions, its simply put, a trap! Hehe...

Edit: Well, certainly alot of views already, too bad the post frequency is less, i like some feedback once in a while, or better, trap suggestions!
The mountains are somewhat... edited already, if you dont see, i already added random slopes and such, though the sky remains a tad high, i might put weapons there hidden along the slopes, for Dukematching, i guess.

And i only need time, not much luck, unless the computer sudenly quits with it, or mapster crashes, i hate it when that happens.

Wel you definately should fix that big flat in the middle of your screen: the texturing doesn't look right at the moment.  Those 2 small buildings in the foreground look pretty cool though.  (Y)

As for the surroundings: it would be cool if you add some more shape in them, right now the horizon is straight black line. :)

Keep up the good work. (y)

Looking nice. Really reminds me of 2005-06 Quakis Type maps, though you need to work on your lighting. Also, you're still overusing the same trimming texture. Use something else.

Maybe if i find other nice textures, and the lightning will come later, im only at the stage of building the first layer! First the basic structures, all the buildings, items and the likes, then sometime shadows, and then the casting of shadows, fear not as shadows will come sooner or later, first to complete the area.

And maybe you'd like to test my traps sometime Merlijn? Hehe... Could be quite inspirational, and a bit of a helping hand with the scary look wont be bad either, though im quite sure the sounds make up for alot of stuff. Maybe some echoes though.
Oh, the ping/speed would probaly be good too, if you are in or close to Holland.

In such case i would have to lower the gigantic gate sometime, though.
I'll also be adding co op, to share the scary experience. If both player's rush in, both will be caught in it, else one goes ahead. But all will be used well along with locking/unlocking teleports.
Now since im awake again from a good nigh's rest, i suppose i'll build more when inspiration strikes.

Edit: I cant get the damn crusher to work! It seems touchplates dont work so properly on SE's with lotag 25.
Hmm... Maybe some sort of ceiling fall would work, but it would be so hard to get done properly.
It has to be able to rise up again too. For multiplayer reasons.

Edit2: A screenshot anyway, since im rather bored, uninspired and need to fix the crusher.
The house finnaly has a roof, if you ask me, those small sprite roof houses have quite a certain charm, no? It also feels so safe... :P Though expect splash damage to go trough the roof.

I still wonder if someone perhaps wants to play-test with me, sometime, and also has a decent connection, i tried once before, and it was quite.... slow.
Preferabaly people with fast internet, or perhaps in the same country(Netherland), or nearby.

Oh, i also lowered the sky a bit, it was a hell load of work though. So many sectors to get at the same ceiling height. This was done mainly for the buildings.

Well this topic doesnt seem very active anymore.
But anyone got some idea's to add further? The crusher is finished at last, in any case.

Development is going somewhat slow, but atleast the traps are faring well.
here's a screenshot of the Crusher anyway, though its a bit dark in there.

When its triggered, its going to be hard to escape, unless you remain calm, hehe.

Hmm... I guess some part of the level will be inspired by the RED maps, Critical Mass, and a bit of my own theme, as well as some more of those sprite roof houses.

The map is going well. According to the screenshots below at the moment of typing there is already 1037 sectors, 7473 walls and 5751 sprites. Sprites being the first to go over the limit.

All those purple things are houses with sprite roofs, the whole area is somewhat desert themed, currently even building some traps.
Intending to add duke tag to the map as well, and the other area's shown on the screenshot with alot of blue sprites are the more scary themed area's. Though dont expect any facegrabbers from me, i hate those.

Maybe at a later time more screenshots. In any case, some idea's and possibily feedback would be of interest.

Edit: Added an 2nd and 3rd screenshot.
The second one is of another building from the inside.
The third one is from the area im currently building the security system of.
The codelock of the door in the back of the image is already functional. Just to make one that disarms the trap.

I hate to tell you this now, but Mapster32 has a function which lets you set the height of all parallax sky sectors to the same value at once.  It's in that menu that pops up when you press ' F in 2D mode. :-\

You should know by now my style can prove to be a little cramped, but as long as you can move, it doesnt seem that horrible to me, else, you can always blow up most objects in the houses.

Hmm... Never knew of such an function either, but im a old-fasioned person anyway, much hard work, plenty time, not too much tools to do so.
Im not fully sure if this is put in the old mapsters too, though. But i only use that one because the grid is unlike the new ones perfect for me, and no annoying size-switching of the sprite selection.
