And it doesn't seem too empty in the middle, unless you think every room must be crammed full of junk that limits lateral movement.

Haha yeah I agree, that's exactly what I was totally going to reply to CarThief before I read your post. There's no way in hell I'm adding pointless stuff (that would probably not even make sense) just for the sake of it at the expense of functionality. Plus when you actually wander around the map in game, it doesn't feel empty at all, in fact it might be my most detailed map yet. And the Oostrums' 'Clear the Coast' is the proof that even a large / relatively empty (because of the large scale) level can look good and play well.

CA, yeah it's a basement / garage, and the walls aren't empty, there are sprite tables and stuff, you just can't see them from that angle :)

CarThief, 'Roch Island' almost used up all the wall limit.

Thanks everyone for the constructive feedback.

And going to the limit will take alot of time, not to mention the possible lagg the map might produce, especially in multiplayer. But who will stop you, i certainly never seen a map actually reaching the ultimate limits.

I don't want to be arrogant here in someone elsed thread so sorry MRCK but may I remind that
I made a user map for WGR in 2005 which used almost the limits too; 16380 walls out of 16384.
It didn't have any lag at all and I worked 5 months on it...

But forget about that here, this is about MRCK's new map...  :)

Thanks ! I'm sure you will love the rest of the map just as much if not more :)

And yeah Numan is right, there's a lot of maps taking advantage of, and even getting close to the new limits out there, noone of which have lags (as far as I've experienced), I wonder if the new limits will have to be broken again one day... One bug I would really like to be fixed is how sprites disappear when 1024 of them can be seen at once, sounds fancy but it actually happens on some of my maps when they have both open space and heavy detailing. It's the reason why those walls in Rural Nightmare are so high...

Wow wow wow the site is back up and running ? Rad.

I haven't touched this map in a while. Which is a shame, because it's probably about 75% done right now. I don't have much time neither to build nor to play video games those days, so don't expect an early release, but it will happen, for those who care.

I'm looking forward to it!  8)

75%? Didn't thought you finished that much :o
Anyway take your time to make it unforgetable! :) Like, as a sort of "come back" :D

Relax MRCK, there are many that cares for your mapping around here. (Y)
I'm one of them.

Thanks for the support guys !

Here's a new screen for you :

It's a section I built quite a while ago, and the screen doesn't show much compared how the in-game experience feels like but whatever, it's still pretty cool I guess. I've been having quite a lot of progress on this one over the past days... Don't you love it when you manage to get rid of a mapper's block thanks to an inspiring dream you make ? I do, it's happened to me a few times before, and it just helped me once more this time again !

Hope you enjoy :)

Thanks.

Only part of the map will take place at night though... In fact I want it to start out in the evening, then as far as the player progresses further in the level and gets to explore various sections of the city, night falls, weather changes, etc. and eventually a new day rises. Of course those scripted sequences imply a somewhat linear gameplay, but whatever. I don't think it's ever been done in a Duke map (I could be wrong though), and if things turn out the way I want them to turn out the results could be very, very atmospheric.

I like it too but because I have to keep my reputation as a grumpy old man I háve to give some critics too.
Well, only one. The street looks very realistic but one thing, how can the graffiti writers work that high?

Looks great, Mrck! Love the atmosphere and texturework on that screenshot.  (Y)

The changing sky sounds like a nice idea too, as long as you do it gradually. I remember someone complaining about red2 (because the entire map has a red sky and at the end it's 'suddenly' night).

Geoffrey made a DM map where it changes from Night to Day over and over again.
