Sad to say, along with an unexpected health issue which prevented me from using the computer for awhile, recently a virus locked my machine and I tried everything to save what I could, to no end...

I lost all my data and I hadn't backed anything up, so Mars Base project is cancelled indefinately... I of course lost the .grp and as I am a poor student living on my own, I haven't got the funds or credit card to purchase a new copy online anytime soon

Just wanted to let the community know,  and ty all for having me

cheers,

- Chris (reflex17)

I'm sorry to hear that. This would be a great loss for our community.
I was looking forward to see what you got up your sleeve.

Wish you all the best.
Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistence
One step from lashing out at you...
You want in to get under my skin
And call yourself a friend
I've got more friends like you
What do I do?

If you mean Duke3D's original .grp file, I think that technically speaking downloading it after you've already bought the game is not piracy, so go for it.

Technically speaking, unless you still have the receipt, then that would be piracy. Downloading from an unofficial source is, technically speaking, piracy.

Scratch up 6 bucks and by it from gog.com or one of those other places. That way if you lose it you have an account that has an official record of your purchases and you can re-download it free.

Are you kidding? if you bought the game once there is nothing wrong on downloading a pirate copy to recover your lost files. They´re the damn same files and it´s afucking 15 years old game! why he would buy another copy?  >:(

It's an ethical debate. If you have no qualms about downloading pirate software, then by all means go ahead, just be prepared to pay the consequences if you're caught. "I used to own it, but my computer crashed" most likely wouldn't stand up in court unless you still had the receipt. Even then it's still a flimsy excuse.
To take it to the extreme, but still relative as far as the law is concerned, would be if I went to a chevrolet dealer and took a camaro. I used to own one until a (ex-) friend of mine drove it and blew up the engine and transmission because he hot-rodded around in it like a jackass. I lost my car indirectly for letting him borrow it while I was deployed to Bosnia, had no monetary way to replace it, and the "friend" had moved away by the time I got back.

In this day and age with modern games all you are paying for is the "CD Key"
This happened to me a while back, I felt a need to play Battle Field 2.
Found my book with the CD key on it "check"
Found my CD case with the CD's in "fail"
Downloaded an image of the DVD "check" and so on.

But I tend to buy my games on steam now so this shit doesn't happen so much.

That actually happened? ouch man!

Still that comparision is stupid, you can´t clone a car and spread copies all along the world like you could do with pirated software. It´s better to compare chinese industry infringing patent laws and making faxsimile bikes and cars for cheaper than a cow. That, actually is, a good analogy.

The comparison isn't stupid, just extreme. Stealing is stealing, just depends on what scale you want to take it to.

I have pictures somewhere, but it's easier to find them on the internet then to dig through a dozen photo albums. This is the car I used to have with the same color scheme.

I don't think there is much of a consequence if your caught downloading a game that was released by a bankrupted company, would there?

You can justify stealing anyway you want. It's still stealing. I wouldn't blame him if he did, but I wouldn't promote it or recommend it.

While piracy is unethical and illegal it can´t be compared with stealing, not at least in the final consumer.
