Vanguard looks good but I stopped playing in the penultimate level because the author thought it's a good idea to take all your guns away. Even on s2 the map has close to 300 enemies.

I liked the first time he takes away all the guns: it works like mini episodes and then it restarts like level 1 again. Especially because on the next level you get the special fist power (those black health packs) which you can use during most of the map which is a nice change of pace.

But yeah the 2nd time wasn't as good...

I'm going through every Paul de Bruyne's wads now (author of Vanguard).

I just played Sector 666 from http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=9745

I liked it a lot even though it does look more dated on many aspects (lack of details, simple texturing); but it had a lot of good level design ideas, and again I love his square symetric design touch.

Some levels also use a few Duke3D textures, as well as sounds from Quake, though not always in a good way.

I just don't understand why anybody would ever want to change sounds in Doom...

Kept on with Aeternum from 2007

3 rather long maps with a lot of action, great music, and interesting design.

Occasionally I don't mind them being replaced with the PSX/64 sounds now and then. They come across quite atmospheric and creepy. Example of that is Altar of Evil

ZPack, a 30ish levels MASTERPIECE from 2008

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=15332

Maps detailed in a modern way, kick ass music, new enemies which do add a lot to the gameplay, lot's of different environment; and all of this while still fitting Doom's atmosphere and while never going over the top.

The only let down for me was the end boss which was just impossible to I cheated to kill it, otherwise, probably the best I've played so far.

Lunatic, the brand new 4 map moon-base wad by the author of Vanguard.

http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/56593-lunatic-wad-finalized/1/

Really good, with some moon like visuals you don't often see in Doom.
Far from the overall quality of Vanguard though but still very enjoyable.

The last levels looks a LOT like Spin Cycle from Duke3D's episode2, but the author says it's a coincidence and he didn't even remember playing it.

The only downside is that I just can't stand the last music, from Europe. However I'm glad to see he used music from Journey To Silius again, which is one of my favourite NES game (I even own a very rare romhack on cartridge of that game).

Cool shots; keep 'em coming, cuz I won't be home for at least a week so admiring screenshots is all I can do at the moment.

That last shot instantly reminded me of Spin cycle (even before I read your post), still looks very cool.  (Y)

Same here...

I've had Zpack sitting around and now I have an excuse to check it out. Shots look nice. Also, thanks for the heads up on Lunatic, I've grabbed that for later. Keep them coming.

I just finished playing Plutonia revisted, a 30-ish levels wad made by many different mappers with to aim to look, play and feel like Plutonia.

It was really good and did feel like Plutonia.

A good variety of different style of levels.

I didn't feel like it was as hard as Plutonia, but maybe it's because I've become better at Doom since then. The first levels felt like they were the most difficult (or maybe it was because I was the most drunk...)

Very enjoyable wad.
