Doom wads
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:30:28 AM »
I'm getting into Doom wads again.

I just played those two episodes made by the same people:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/slaughter-until-death

http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-evil-unleashed-doom

The first one is good and but the sequel is great.

In any case both feel like classic Doom and that's all I asked for. Apparently they were released in 1994.

Now I'm going to try
http://www.moddb.com/mods/serenity1
and
http://www.moddb.com/mods/eternity

from 1994 as well? Insane.

Any other recommendation?

Those two were great.

I couldn't finish Serenity though (the prequel to Eternity) I got stuck in a level at the end of the episode, cheated to go the next level, and got stuck again. Both Serenity and Slaughter Until Death are far from being as good as their sequels anyway.

Useful links I often check when I'm in the mood for some Doom;

http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Cacowards
http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_notable_WADs

I tried Void and Alien TC and I didn't like them. That's not what I'm looking for in a Doom episode: I want classic Doom; which both Evil Unleashed and Eternity provided in a great way.
The gameplay in Void was terrible due to all the shitty jumping segments.

I have rarely finished a megawad even though I have started plenty. Hell Revealed 1 & 2 were good.

I also played No Rest for the Living for Doom II which is the extra episode of the XBLA version. Really good.

Let's see what I can play next...

Is it available on PC yet? I remember trying to look for it a couple of months ago.

Not officially as far as I know. There are a few wads out there that people have ripped though that you can use to play on the PC. Think this is a working version.

Earlier I played Infinity, sequel to Serenity and Eternity.
It wasn't as good as Eternity.

Now I'm playing a pack of 30 small maps made by many different people

Thanks, that worked.

Pretty good episode, detailed but not too detailed. Liked the final boss and the text screen. Too bad it kept the same boring brown sky the whole time though.

Two episode 2 style maps from 2002. Really good though really short.

The 2nd map was pretty big, took me 13 minutes. They were good, a bit cramped though and I always miss the double-barreled shotgun.

I don't, I like the regular shotgun more. I just feel forced to use the double barreled one because it's more powerful (it's 2,5x more powerful than the regular one at close range, even though it only uses 2x more ammo).

I also like Doom 1 and Doom1 style wads much more than Doom2's.
The worst there is in Doom 2 style are the city maps. There are a few in Memento Mori (which I mentionned earlier in the thread and which I haven't finished yet) which are just terrible. If I want to play city maps I'll just play Duke3D.

The double-barreled shotgun is the best fps weapon.

I played Doom 2 before I played The Ultimate Doom so I guess that makes me prefer Doom 2 over the original. Arch-vile is also the best fps monster.

That son of a bitch....

My favorite monster is the mini spiderbrain thing. The sound it makes when getting hurt and when dying is the most satisfying.

What's the equivalent to DNR for Duke3D so I could get info on the most recents maps, and with a forum as well? (if such a thing does exist).
