The wall by Eddy Zykov
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:20:12 PM »
I'm posting about this here since it's only getting a tiny bit of attention in the other forums and it definitly deserves more.

Eddy posted some shots here:
http://forums.duke4.net/topic/4468-the-wall/

and the download link is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0iatgdxdmmvzgo9

It's 100% worth the time since it's a really original concept and Eddy does some amazing things with a combination of build and con effects.

I played in it before release, and I just amazed!
But...I wouldn't call this map with a perfect design or structure of the level. But the use of new textures with more than compensates this thing. Moreover, for the first time I was not very care about passage, but I was very interested about story.
Anyway, in terms of plot it's best map that came out in the last years,folks...

Thanks for the update, James !

I've got more friends like you

Could  this be a front page news item? I never seen anything like it. I have the album from Pink Floyd but never seen the movie and pay little attention to lyrics. This level is at times downright disturbing, I guess like the movie.

It's a clear 100 mark in my books, minus 2 points, because there always will be critics, and nothing is ever perfect. The cut scenes, the effects and the artwork would even classify this huge level as a TC. I think the reason it does not catch on is that it is so completely different. Just give it some time. Creme rises to the top, and so will this level.

Thanks Eddy - super stuff here; methinks  (Y) (Y)

The wall: an interactive rock opera, circa 27 June 2011, by Zykov Eddy

So ya thought ya might like to go to the show? Well here it is. A conceptual map based on the movie Pink Floyd The Wall. While there is some game play involved; fighting aliens, key cards, number combo pads, and a few puzzles, the main theme is the experience. The map, like the movie, is broken up into "acts" which take place in in multiple locations, are accompanied by different musical scores, and divided by cut scenes.

Other than a few sky textures that should have been stretched, the cut scenes are absolutely amazing. Created using art and build tricks; they're an existential experience and need to be seen for yourself to fully appreciate them.

The map uses three acts from the movie, and while some areas suffer from a lack of trim work and weak shading which could have helped create a bit more depth; like inside the hospital and hotel, the new art and textures do help to compensate some for it. This lack of shading and trimwork actually enhance other areas; like the bathroom in the beginning, the caves and grave yard, and the cut scenes, by enhancing a dream like state. Most of the areas are also on the low detailed side of the coin, but in this case less is more, as it follows the movie's bleak atmosphere. The ending, while enjoyable, was slightly anti-climatic. Still, the map plays like watching a film and should be an enjoyable experience for all, even for those not familiar with the movie.

side notes: There are many helpful on screen hints, such as when to save. You might want to make sure the game did save before moving on. If you use a number pad before you have the code you can't back out. Just type in three random numbers to get off of it.

Texturing/Lighting-Shading:8/10
Sprite Work/Detailing:10/10
Ambiance: 10/10
Architecture/: 19/20
Layout: 20/20
Gameplay/Design: 29/30
Overall: 96/100

Sorry I couldn't do better. It took me two days just to get this.

I can't play this until I get back to my own computer later in the month.  Can someone post a movie of playing the whole map?  I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see it.

Great review, Forge  (Y) Thank you!

The thanks goes to you for providing such an enjoyable experience. I'm sorry the review pales in comparison to the map itself, but that was the best I could come up with while trying to concentrate through a veil of pain.

I just read Mikko's review and I'm glad we came up with the same high score. This project deserves it.

D'oh, found it & passed the level.

Very good map. Excellent special effects & cutscenes were ace. Fairly unique experience, but because I haven´t watched the movie & so didn´t get the story at all, I may not fully appreciate the level as it is.

Puritan should upload this map here, because it is great addition to our map collection.
